AssessMobility – Standardised assessment of mobility in neurological diseases

Background of the research project:

Standardised examinations using a measuring instrument (so-called assessments) are used to measure different aspects of a patient's health status and provide values that quantify performance or health status. Despite the known advantages of using assessments, it is clear that integrating them into healthcare poses a particular challenge. Together with SRH healthcare facilities, this project aims to reduce this gap and thus optimise the care of people with neurological diseases.

Project goals

With the project „International Research Experience @SRH“ we pursue three goals:

  1. Internationalization of research-oriented education
Starting with the study programs „Architecture – Design for the built environment“ (M.A.) and „Water Technology“ (M.Eng.) and in cooperation with our partner universities we are testing a new kind of seminar: the research-oriented „Research Event Series“. Together with international students and teachers you will be studying research-focused - both in virtual formats and in a research project week on site in Heidelberg. With the "Research Event Series" you expand your research skills, make new contacts and gain international and intercultural experience.
  2. Establishment of international cooperative doctorates
You are interested in doing research? We are strengthening the follow-up perspectives for young scientists at our university and supporting your start into an academic career. The establishment of cooperative doctoral programs with our partner universities will give you the opportunity to conduct research in an international context. In the future, a newly established Graduate Center will offer you a comprehensive range of advice and support services for doctoral students and those interested in pursuing a doctorate. Feel free to contact us!
  3. Expansion of international partner networks
We are constantly working on increasing international, research-oriented mobility and expanding our international partner network. To this end, we award various research fellowships for students, doctoral candidates, guest lecturers and experts within the project. Apply now and take the opportunity to broaden your research horizon abroad. In the future, a newly created international cooperation database will provide you with information on partner universities, research priorities and cooperation opportunities with international partners.

The regular and uniform use of assessments results in numerous advantages and opportunities, such as the possibility of evaluating and optimising (new) care services, generating cross-facility health data and strengthening intra- and interprofessional collaboration. Accordingly, the project has the potential to contribute to the improvement of healthcare and also promotes the exchange of information and cooperation within the SRH Group.

Our project partners:

The practice-based research project is being carried out in close cooperation between SRH clinics and universities. Accordingly, physiotherapists, therapy managers and doctors from various clinics are involved in the project from the outset. The following SRH healthcare facilities with neurological departments are involved in the project:

  • SRH Kurpfalzkrankenhaus Heidelberg
  • SRH Karlsbad-Langensteinbach Hospital
  • SRH Specialist Hospital Neresheim
  • SRH Health Centre Bad Wimpfen
  • SRH Health Centres Northern Black Forest, Waldbronn site
  • SRH Waldklinikum Gera
  • SRH clinics in the district of Sigmaringen
  • SRH Rehabilitation Centre Gera
  • SRH Physiotherapy on the campus of SRH University Heidelberg
  • SRH Clinics Burgenland

🎓🌟 Successful completion of five bachelor theses in the AssessMobility@SHR project!

We are delighted to announce that five of our students have successfully completed their bachelor thesis colloquia! 🎉👏 The bachelor theses were carried out as part of the first phase of the "AssessMobility@SHR" project.

These five students have worked intensively on various aspects of the introduction of assessments to evaluate mobility and balance.

Congratulations go to Anna Schellin and Louis Zimmer, who produced a scoping review to summarise recommendations for the standardised measurement of mobility and balance from German guidelines. Hannah Müller and Sarah Link analysed environmental factors relevant to the use of assessments in routine physiotherapy care during observations in all participating SRH healthcare facilities. Maike Neidig analysed the first group discussion, in which criteria for the selection of assessments for the evaluation of mobility and balance were collected and weighted.

We would like to congratulate the graduates on achieving their Bachelor's degree! Their theses make a valuable contribution to the project goal of AssessMobility@SRH by implementing assessments for the evaluation of mobility and balance in the participating neurological departments of SRH Health.

Successful presentations at the 8th Physiotherapy Research Symposium

As part of the AssessMobility@SRH project, two posters were presented at the 8th Research Symposium of the German Society for Physiotherapy Sciences (DGPTW) on 22 and 23 November 2024 in Senftenberg. 🖼️🎓

Marilena Marino, Head of Therapy at "Physiotherapie am Campus" and project collaborator, presented the results of the first project phase ("Selection of assessments for implementation in routine care: A multi-stage decision-making process with physiotherapists from ten neurological facilities of a clinic group").

In addition, Jule Klassen, Master's student and research assistant in the project, presented her survey results ("Barriers and facilitators in the use of assessments to evaluate balance and mobility in people with neurological impairments: A survey in eleven facilities of a clinic group").

The presentations led to valuable new contacts and inspired fresh ideas for the further development of the project. 🤝💡
