As part of the "Energy and Sustainability" module, International Business and Engineering (M. Ing.) students were given the task of developing an energy concept for an ICE maintenance depot in collaboration with DB Energie GmbH in order to install heat pumps without replacing the existing transformers. Students from the Climate Change Management and Engineering degree programme (B. Ing.) were also involved in the project.
The students received the existing transformer output and the installed boiler heat output currently used for space heating from DB Energie in a high temporal resolution. They analysed various energy supply alternatives that are technically feasible, economically viable and ecologically justifiable in order to develop the energy timetable for the selected DB site.
The students were asked to focus their work on electricity and heat supply, electrical storage and the merit order of different scenarios, carrying out their analyses in groups of three in competition with other student groups.
