Shaping communication

On the Bachelor's degree programme B.A. Communication Design, you will focus on graphics and visual communication as well as photography, film, illustration and interactive design.

You will learn the strategic conception and innovative creation of communication design in regular exchange with exciting practice partners and in interdisciplinary projects with other degree programmes.

The core area of graphics includes presentation and design methodology, typography, corporate design, scenography and editorial design. Other specialisations include photography, film, design and media studies, illustration and interactive design. Marketing Communication teaches additional skills that round off the profile of the degree programme and deepen the ability to address specific target groups through visual communication.

The course also offers a wide range of opportunities to specialise in areas such as editorial design, photography, film and animation production, illustration and interaction design. An internship in an agency or company also offers the opportunity to develop an individual profile. Overall, the degree programme provides optimal preparation for a successful career in the world of communication design and beyond.

After graduating, you will be able to plan, coordinate and successfully implement creative projects in the field of communication design in various professional contexts, in agencies or communication and design departments in companies and organisations, either independently or in cooperation.

As an option, you have the opportunity to study the B.A. in Communication Design on a dual study programme, where you can not only acquire the theoretical, conceptual and creative skills, but also implement them with a permanent employer. You will find cooperation partners in the communications sector and industry, creative industries or start-up scene as well as NGOs and government organisations.

Your modules

The Bachelor in Illustration teaches foundational design and illustration skills. Students learn important design skills through courses such as design basics, illustration basics, character design and animation. They gain practical experience in the media lab, through an internship at home or abroad and a freelance illustration project.

Creative specialisations are offered in modules such as Concept Art, Narrative Illustration and Editorial Design. There are also research aspects with artistic research and the academic colloquium. Compulsory elective modules and practice-oriented work round off the programme.

Authorisation

You can apply at any time without obligation via our online portal to apply. We will then check your application documents and invite you to a personal interview.

To apply for the Bachelor's degree programme in Communication Design , you need

  • General higher education entrance qualification, entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences or an equivalent higher education entrance qualification or higher education entrance qualification for qualified professionals*
  • Portfolio with around 10-15 of your own design works (drawings, images, graphics, photos or scribbles)** - You can upload the portfolio together with your application, send it to us or simply bring it with you to the personal interview.
  • CV with current passport photo
  • Copy of ID (front and back), for foreign students copy of National Identity Card
  • Proof of sufficient German language skills (for international applicants)***

If your documents are approved, we will invite you to a personal admissions interview. Here we want to find out more about your programme-specific knowledge, creativity and motivation. It will also give you the opportunity to ask more detailed questions about the study programme. If you are unable to visit us in Berlin, we are also happy to offer an online appointment.

  2. If you fulfil the admission requirements, we will invite you to a selection interview
  3. If the interview is successful, you will receive a letter of acceptance and a study contract from us
  4. You sign the study contract and send it back to us
  5. You pay the enrolment fee
  6. We will send you your letter of admission
  7. You take part in our induction week and then you're ready to go!
